Water level of the Sholayar Dam in Valparai has exceeded 122 feet
Coimbatore: The Sholayar Dam is the main dam of the Parambikulam - Aliyar project in Valparai, Coimbatore district.
It has been raining in Valparai area for the last one week due to the southwest monsoon. The catchment area of Sholayar Dam continues to receive heavy rainfall in the upper and lower Nirar. Due to this the water level in the dam has increased and the Sholayar Dam rose 5 feet in one day yesterday and was at 123 feet this morning. As of 6 am today, 89 m and 53 mm of rainfall was recorded at Lower Nirar Dam, 41 mm at Sholayar Dam and 38 mm at Valparai.
The Sholayar Dam receives 2822.33 cubic feet of water. The dam discharges 407.51 cubic feet of water to Powerhouse 1 and 445.06 cubic feet to Powerhouse 2 for power generation, for a total of 852.57 cubic feet. The water level in the 165 feet high dam is 122.73 feet. The Koozhangal River, a catchment area of the Sholayar Dam, is flooded. The Sholayar Dam is expected to fill up soon due to heavy rains in the Valparai area. Public works officials are monitoring the dam
