BJP is not interested in bifurcating TamilNadu and creating Kongu Nadu: Party TN spokesperson

Chennai: BJP’s stand is not for bifurcating Tamil Nadu nor for creating Kongu Nadu (western belt).

Chennai: BJP’s stand is not for bifurcating Tamil Nadu nor for creating Kongu Nadu (western belt). The party’s aim to create a prosperous Tamil Nadu and a strong Bharat, spokesperson of BJP’s TN unit A N S Prasad said on Monday.

“Neither the state president (K Annamalai) nor the state general secretaries have issued any official statement, clarifying the party’s stand on the issue. Hence, the party functionaries should restrain from airing their personal views on the issue,” Prasad said.

He also posted a message in the same vein, reflecting the views of several state-level functionaries over the controversy over Kongu Nadu. “We would go hard on people who make these kinds of baseless things. They, in fact, told the concerned party unit to recall the resolution. Being a national party, there is a responsibility for the party and responsibility for leaders who make any statement,” said a senior leader preferring anonymity.

The clarification comes a day after the Coimbatore North district unit passed a resolution demanding creation of Kongu Nadu, which further flared up the ongoing debate over bifurcating Tamil Nadu. The resolution was passed as part of the executive meeting of district units across the state.

“The views of the functionaries over Kongu Nadu could be misinterpreted by vested interests to fuel an unwanted controversy and hate politics. Hence, we have asked our functionaries to avoid expressing their personal views on such sensitive issues,” he said.

It all started after the Union government published the profile of Union minister of state L Murugan, mentioning that he hails from Kongu Nadu in Tamil Nadu. It further flared up after some outfits and sympathisers of the BJP took it to social media and demanded creation of Kongu Nadu to counter the DMK government calling the BJP government at the Centre as “Ondriya Arasu” (Union government).

While all the jostling continues in social media and with party spokesman, MK Stalin and other DMK members officially still continue to refer it as Union Government as per the constitution and BJP's Coimbatore North division has passed a resolution to form Kongu Nadu as if it was a candy to be bought from a store.
