The Siruvani Dam is the main source of drinking water for one-third of Corporation of Coimbatore. Drinking water from the Siruvani Dam in Palakkad, Kerala is supplied to 36 wards and roadside villages in Coimbatore.
The dam is 49.5 feet high. However, the dam only holds water up to a height of 45 feet. The dam is located at an elevation of 878 m above sea level. The dam can hold 650 million cubic feet of groundwater.
The southwest monsoon begins in the state of Kerala and reaches TN. Coimbatore has also received good monsoon over the last few days at Valparai, Azhiyar, Cinchona and Corporation areas. Due to this rain, the water level of Siruvani Dam has risen well.
According to PWD, the monsoon is intensifying in the south-west of Kerala and it is raining in the catchment areas of the Siruvani Dam. Due to this the water level of the dam has risen to 24.40 feet. The water level rose to 25 feet last June and then dropped to 20 feet. Currently rising again.
At present 101 MLD per day is required for the Corporation's drinking water requirement from the dam. Water is being taken. ”
