Over 1 lakh has been returned to as many as seven Covid patients who were reported to have overcharged for their treatment, by the private hospital in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: Lakhs of rupees has been returned to as many as seven Covid patients who were reported to have overcharged for their treatment, by the Sri Lakshmi Hospital in Coimbatore.
Eight Covid patients who had been admitted in this hospital for the treatment have been asked to pay an extra amount than the amount capped by the Tamil Nadu government. Earlier in May, the Tamil Nadu government revised the cost of Covid treatment in private hospitals for both beneficiaries and non beneficiaries of the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).
The government had noted and capped the price for the treatment of non-critical cases without oxygen support to Rs 5,000 per day, Rs 15,000 for non-critical cases with oxygen support. The cost for patients needing ICU with invasive ventilation has been capped to Rs 35,000 and patients needing ICU with non-invasive ventilation, CPAP and BiPAP oxygen devices to Rs 30,000. However, patients needing ICU with only oxygen support are asked to pay Rs 25,000.
Coming to the rescue, the state government also added that the cost of medicines and other ICU tests will be borne by the government. Adhering not to these orders, private hospitals in few districts in Tamil Nadu have allegedly forced Covid patients to pay more. Similar such incident happened in a private hospital in Coimbatore. However, after multiple attempts by PMK’s Ashok Srinithi, politician based in Coimbatore, the hospital has now refunded the amount.
According to his social media post and after reviewing the confirmation messages of the beneficiaries who have got their amount back by SimpliCity, it is revealed that upto Rs 1.5 lakh has been refunded to seven out of eight patients who were overcharged. Ashok said the development comes after multiple complaints raised by him to the district collector and DDHS.
He also said he had sent as many as ten complaints to the officials through the registrar post besides seeking a reply in RTI six times. This is the first district in Tamil Nadu in which the private hospital that overcharged patients for Covid treatment had returned their money back.
