Buses resume operations in Coimbatore; Public requested to follow Covidd prevention measures
Coimbatore: After a long gap of 50 days, Coimbatore is once again abuzz with traffic and business activity with bus services resuming and shops reopened.
Normalcy is steadily being restored. The Government has also urged public and establishments to follow all the safety guidelines announced by the Government. Bus services resumed in the city today after two months. Coimbatore State Transport Corporation operates 625 city buses and 840 outstation buses.
Public transport in Tamil Nadu had been clamped since last May due to the second wave of the Covid-19. Public transport was banned in 11 districts, including Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Erode which were particularly affected. All buses were cleaned on Sunday at the workshop.
Seats, handles and stairs in buses are being cleaned with disinfectants after each trip. Passengers are allowed to board the bus only after ensuring they are wearing face shields. The Transport Corporation has advised drivers and conductors to admit only 50 percent of passengers on the buses following the Government's standard guidelines.
However, most city buses have a 100 percent seating capacity.
The Coimbatore State Transport Corporation operates 1425 buses, plying 625 city buses and 840 other districts on various routes from Coimbatore, Pollachi, Valparai, Annur, Kinathukadavu, Periyanaickenpalayam and Mettupalayam. Buses are available from Nellai, Tuticorin, Nagercoil, Chennai, Bangalore, Gandhipuram Express, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand, Madurai, Karur, Trichy and Singanallur.
Government buses ply from Coimbatore to Walayar on the Kerala border and to Hosur on the Karnataka border. According to the management of the Transport Corporation, the number of buses will be increased according to the number of passengers. It is to be noted that private buses across the district have also started operating from Monday. Many of the intra-district buses were plying empty since there was still an impending fear amongst people. More than 50 percent of the Government buses were operated from Gandhipuram bus stand to take people to their hometowns.
Conductors and drivers have been advised to compulsorily use face masks and sanitizers, since there were reports that a few conductors and drivers operated buses without wearing a face mask since the weather is hot during the day. There is a Government order that passengers should be given sanitizer by the conductors while boarding the bus. The conductors were reportedly unable to follow through since people were thronging both intra-district and inter-district buses to go to their hometowns. Similarly, the main roads in Coimbatore, Oppanakara Street, Gandhi Park Townhall Road, 100 ft. Road, Ukkadam Main Road, GP Signal, Gandhipuram Signal and other areas were crowded.
