Elderly man severely injured in an elephant attack in Periya Thadagam
Coimbatore: Elephant movement is common in various parts of the foothills of the Western Ghats of Coimbatore, especially Thadagam Narasipuram.
A 75-year-old man was admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital on Thursday after being trampled by an elephant. Lakshmanan's legs were broken after the elephant attacked him at Periya Thadagam in Coimbatore. He was later rescued by the Forest Department officials and the public on Thursday morning and is being treated at a private hospital.
Lakshmanan lives alone on a farm in Periya Thadagam, near Coimbatore. A lone male wild elephant entered his mango farm on Wednesday night and on seeing the elephant, Lakshmanan advanced toward toward the elephant and made loud noises to make the elephant leave the farm premises. Presuming that the elephant had left, Lakshmanan was returning home when the elephant suddenly returned and chased Lakshmanan. The elephant reportedly kicked him and trampled him on his legs.
Lakshmanan screamed in fright even as he felt his legs fracture, after which the elephant left the farm. Passers-by were shocked to find Lakshmanan lying injured outside his house in the farm premises and quickly informed the Coimbatore Forest Department that an elephant had attacked Lakshmanan and that both his legs seemed broken. Forest officials rushed to the farm and with the help of the public were able to send Lakshmanan to a private hospital by the 108 ambulance.
According to the Forest Department, elephants are currently roaming in the Thadagam, Mangarai and Periya Thadagam areas. They warned locals in these areas not to venture out unnecessarily at night. They also advised residents that if they noticed any elephant movement in their towns to quickly inform the Forest Department and not try to chase the elephants away by themselves.
