Airport Director facilitates Paramedics for saving lives in Coimbatore Airport

Coimbatore: Airport Director R. Mahalingam felicitated the Paramedics who were manning the Airport Medical Room for saving the life of a 72 year old lady who had a medical emergency.

On 18.06.2021, a 72 year old lady passenger was traveling with her family from Hyderabad to Coimbatore on a Indigo flight. She felt drowsy as the flight was nearing Coimbatore. She was a diabetic and thinking of the possibility of low Blood Sugar the Indigo Staff gave sugar but she did not recover. As the flight landed at the Coimbatore airport, the lady became unconscious and unresponsive.

The Indigo Staff immediately declared a medical emergency and the medical personnel at the Coimbatore Airport rushed to the aircraft to rescue the unconscious lady. They did a quick survey and found that the Blood Sugar was only 27 mg which is a dangerously low level. They immediately started an intravenous line rushed in fluids and dextrose.

She was unconscious from oral resuscitation. They shifted her out of the aircraft to the ambulance to the periphery of the parking bay. They continued resuscitation in the ambulance and the patient gradually regained her consciousness and she was stabilized. Later she went home. The family and the co-passengers appreciated the prompt and coordinated efforts of the entire team of the medical professionals and the Airport Staff.

They were felicitated by Mahalingam, Airport Director and Dr. S. Raja Sabapathy, Director, Ganga Hospital. Mahalingam appreciated the efforts of the entire team for rising up to the demands of the occasion. Mahalingam thanked Ganga Hospital, who have been providing the service of the Paramedics and a 24 x 7 ambulance service at the airport for the past 3 years. Dr. Raja Sabapathy said that when the Blood Sugar goes to dangerously low levels, we hardly have 10 minutes to resuscitate before permanent damage occurs to the brain. He congratulated the entire team for the appropriate action.
