Youth donated blood at camp organised by IMA Coimbatore Chapter and Rotary Club of Coimbatore Meridian


Coimbatore: An equal number of male and female youth came ahead and donated blood at the blood donation camp organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Coimbatore Chapter in partnership with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Meridian on Saturday.

The on-going blood donation drive is organised at the IMA hall. On Saturday, day one of the drive as many as 150 individuals registered and close to 50 units of blood was donated. The units of blood were sent to the blood bank of the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

The camp saw several first time donors. The youngest being 18 years old and the oldest donor is close to 50-years of age. All donors were sent home with a certificate courtesy the IMA Coimbatore Chapter and they also received a confirmation coupon to be inoculated for the corona virus for free. Donors who donated blood on Saturdaywill be administered the jab on Mondayat a vaccination centre in the city.

The blood donation camp was inaugurated by Coimbatore District Collector Dr. G. S. Sameeran and by Deputy Director of Health Dr. S. Senthil Kumar in the presence of members from the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Meridian and IMA Coimbatore. After assuming office in the city, this is the debut event that the district attended.

“There is an acute shortage of blood in the city. The second wave of the corona pandemic has resulted in a spike in the need for blood.” one of the organisers told SimpliCity. At the camp doctor members of the IMA Coimbatore Chapter clarified doubts about donating blood during the pandemic. The various myths that surround blood donation during these tough times has made many potential donors sceptical about donating blood. At the respective blood donation drive organisers assure that all covid protocols will be adhered to. Blood will be collected only from eligible donors.

Those who are interested in donating blood can visit the IMA Coimbatore Chapter blood bank which operates on all days between 8am and 8pm. This is an on-going blood donation drive which is organised to ensure that the demand for blood is matched with supply.
