Residents of Gandhipuram in Coonoor allowed to step out as Covid-19 relaxations come into effect


The Nilgiris: With the Covid-19 pandemic not sparing any part of the country, a complete lockdown was clamped upon Tamil Nadu too. Nilgiris district was no exception. But now, residents of the Gandhipuram area in Coonoor have been allowed to go out into the town on certain conditions.

A protest by the Gandhipuram residents was called off on Tuesday after the Health Department announced that residents in the area would be allowed to step out, on certain conditions.

The Coonoor Gandhipuram area in Nilgiris district is home to about 800 people from over 500 families. Most of the residents here are daily wage laboureres carrying loads, gas cylinder distributors and construction workers. The area was declared a containmnet zone for 14 days since 12 families in the area were infected with Covid-19.



Since all those affected by Covid-19 had recovered and returned home, people from Gandhipuram area gathered at the Gandhipuram School premises demanding that those from the restricted area be allowed to step out. Officials including Coonoor Deputy Superintendent of Police, Suresh and Municipal Commissioner (Responsible) Muruganantham mediated with the residents, after which they dispersed since the authorities had assured them that conditional relaxations would be made.
