Coimbatore administration identifies and shuts 24 new illegal brick kilns

Coimbatore: Even after the Madras High Court issued an order to the Coimbatore district administration and the Mines, Geology and Pollution Department to close all illegal brick kilns in Thadagam valley, it is reported that several brick kiln owners have continued their illegal activities at midnight.

As many as 186 brick kilns were sealed near Thadagam valley comprising five panchayats, following the Court's order by the district administration recently. Former District Collector S Nagarajan on June 13, 2021 issued an order to shut all illegal brick kilns, days after a group of activists alleged unprecedented activities undertaken by the brick kiln owners, which involved exporting bricks from sealed units during midnight.

This comes in the wake of the Thudiyalur North Tahsildar issuing orders for the closure of brick kilns and the Madras High Court ordered the District administration to proceed further. While the process of closure of the brick kilns began, the officials meanwhile unearthed 24 new brick kilns functioning in Chinna Thadagam, Nanjundapuram, Veerapandi, Pannimadai and Somayampalayam.

A district administration official told SimpliCity that all kilns have been served notice and shut down immediately. Social activists continue to cry foul over the repeated activities of brick kiln owners, despite several actions against them.
