Coimbatore: For the first time in 25 days the district reported 904 daily cases on Sunday. June 19’s cases was at 1,014. The highest case of fresh cases in the district was 4,734 on May 27.

However, with the downward trend, the overall persons tested positive for the virus in the district stands at 2,12,493. With 17 new deaths, which again is declining steadily over all in the intensified lockdown, the total toll now stands at 1888.

As many as 1,277 people discharged in the district on Tuesday taking the total active cases to 1,0802.

Overall the state reported a drop in number of cases from 70,000 mark and stands at 69,372 as of Tuesday. With this, the test positivity rate stands at 5% in the state.

Despite the drop in cases, doctors warn public to remain indoors unless needed as the widespread infection in the state during second wave was caused by delta variant, a new variant which WHO said to be a variant of concern. The recent data released by state health department on Sunday said as many as 386 out of 554 test samples have reported delta variant, during December 2020 to May 2021.

It also said the variant was mostly found on adolescents and adults above 12-years-old compared to children. Of the 554 samples tested, 96 were children up to 12 years, among them 73 had Delta variant, the state health department noted.

It also added that of 554 samples, 66 were vaccine breakthrough cases and among them 55, which means 83%, had Delta variant.
