CITU urges Government of Tamil Nadu to provide relief funds to construction workers

Coimbatore: The CITU Construction Workers' Union has demanded that coronavirus disaster relief be provided to construction workers. K. Manoharan, President of the CITU Coimbatore District Building Workers Union wrote a petition to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

It said, "Next to agriculture in Tamil Nadu, the construction sector employs more workers. Construction workers have lost their jobs and livelihoods have been affected as lockdowns are being imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection. Construction workers must take action to provide Rs. 3,000 relief each during this disaster to protect their livelihoods. Cement is the raw material needed for the construction industry as the lockdown is relaxed. Prices of materials including wire gravel and M sand have risen sharply. Thus the public and construction workers are severely affected. We want government intervention for necessary action to control the rise in prices of construction materials."

He stressed in the petition that the demands of the people of Tamil Nadu and the construction workers must be fulfilled considering their livelihood.
