Policeman suspended for stealing prisoner's money in Tirupur

Coimbatore: A policeman has been suspended after he was found to have stolen lakhs of rupees using his ATM. When he was released on bail a policeman withdrew four lakh rupees from the prisoner's bank account, and was 'suspended'.

Three months ago, the Avinashi Crime Branch police registered a case and arrested the culprit in connection with the iron theft at an iron mill in Chinnakanur, Tirupur district. Police arrested and jailed Anandan, a scrap iron merchant in Anuradhapura, for allegedly buying stolen iron. Anandan, who was released on bail, was shocked to learn that more than four lakh rupees had been withdrawn when he checked his bank account.

In a petition sent to the Human Rights Commission and senior police officials, Anandan said, 'At the time of my arrest, policeman Ranjith had bought his bank account, ATM, card and PIN number. When I was in jail, the ATM card was used to withdraw four lakh rupees. '

Following the departmental inquiry, policeman Ranjith was suspended by the Tirupur district SP, Seshang Sai.
