Steep increase in water levels of Sholayar Dam in Valparai


Coimbatore: The Sholayar Dam is the main dam of the Parambikulam Aliyar project in Valparai, Coimbatore district. It has been raining in the Valparai area for the last one week.

Heavy rains have continued in the upper and lower Nirar area and in the Sholayar Dam catchment area. Due to this, the water level in the dam has increased from 35 feet in the last two days to 53 feet in the last two days. Today it has risen sharply to 90 feet. As of 6 am today, 59 mm rainfall is recorded in Lower Nirar Dam and 61 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Upper Nirar, 90 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Sholayar Dam area and 34 mm in Valparai.



Sholayar Dam receives 4248.92 cubic feet of water and discharges 418 cubic feet of water from the dam for power generation. The water level in the 165 feet high dam is 90.00 feet. The Koozhangal River, a catchment area of the Sholayar Dam, is flooded. The Sholayar Dam is expected to fill up soon if it continues to rain in the Valparai area. Public works officials are monitoring the dam constantly to check water levels.
