Pond bund breaks causing crops in 8 acres of land submerge in water: Farmers devastated by incident caused due to negligence of PWD officials

Coimbatore: The southwest monsoon has intensified in Kerala and it has been raining heavily for the last 4 days in the western ghats of Coimbatore.

Small onions and sugarcane cultivated on about 8 acres were submerged due to water flooding as the bunds gave away in Ukkulam, Semmedu in Coimbatore.

Due to the continuous rain, the bund of the lake broke this morning. The farmers immediately informed the Public Works Officer and the farmers were waiting for the authorities to come.

As authorities were negligent and did not take any action in this regard, the farmers repaired the break in the pond with a JCB machine at their own expense. The farmer alleged that the water had overflowed due to continuous rains and that the bunds broke in the morning and even though they informed immediately the public works authorities acted negligently without taking any action until evening.

They also said that they have repaired the break with the JCB machine themselves to prevent the water from going all over the farm in case of further delay.

Total of 8 acres were cultivated with small onions cultivated in 4 acres and sugarcane in 4 acres. Sugarcane, which is 6 months old, was completely submerged in water. Farmers demanded that the Tamil Nadu government and the district administration immediately pay Rs 3 lakh per acre as compensation due to their negligence.
