Bhavani river floods as Pillur dam overflows in Coimbatore


Coimbatore: Due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Pillur Dam, the dam is overflowing and the Bhavani River is flooded. Pillur Dam is located in the Karamadai forest near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district.

Maximum water level of the dam is 100 feet and for safety reasons only 97 feet of water is stored. In the Nilgiris district, it has been raining heavily for the past few days.

Pillur Dam hence received 3,000 cubic feet per second, with a maximum of 14,000 cubic feet. The night before yesterday, the water level at Pillur Dam was 86.75 feet. Early yesterday morning, at 3:00 a.m., the dam reached 97 feet and overflowed. In a single day, the water levels rose up to 10 feet. As the dam filled, the excess water was released through all four sluices.

This caused the Bhavani river to flood. People living along the coast were asked to be safe. Bhavani Sagar Erode District, Bhavani Sagar Dam Water Level, 105 ft. 32.8 TMC, with capacity. The water level in the Bhavani River has risen to 90 feet yesterday as the water from the Bhavani River opens into the Bhavani Sagar Dam. The water stored currently is at 21.5 TMC making farmers happy.
