Valparai boat house in ruins even before being put to use

Coimbatore: There have been protests from various quarters in Valparai demanding for a boat house to attract more tourists to Coimbatore district.

Several petitions were made to various Government officials and work kick-started last year on the baot house by the Valparai municipality.

About 1.5 acres of land at a cost of approximately Rs. 5 crores was sanctioned to set up a boat house in Valparai within a radius of 1 km. The area was levelled for a boat house and a perimeter wall was built around the boat house with pavement for people to walk on.

The Municipal Commissioner and politicians hastily inaugurated the boat house on February 26 after the announcement of the Tamil Nadu assembly election date, even before the work was completed.

Currently, the boat house is polluted with stench emanating from the water, and debris strewn all over the boat house.

The 25 boats which had been purchased for the Valparai boat house have not been put to use and are littered with garbage. Public in Valparai have expressed their concern and have demanded that the boat house work be completed quickly and opened out to the public.
