Kanagaraj (50) hailing from Kanuvaipalayam village owns four cents of land which is owned by his wife Ramya (43). A hotel TN43 has been constructed on this land by Mujib (50) on a contract of Rs. 45,000 per month.
More than 20 small-time shopkeepers regularly set up shops along the roadside at the weekly market on Tuesday afternoons in the Kanuvaipalayam section in Mettupalyam. Vairamuthu's son Selvaraj (50), Selvaraj's son Kunja (45) and Ponnammal (70) from Kanuvaipalayam Amman Nagar area had set up a vegetable shop as usual when the iron rod on which the hotel billboard was to be mounted, weighing over 500 kg fell on the three vegetable vendors.
All three were seriously injured in the mishap. Selvaraj was admitted to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital with serious head injuries and is currently being treated at the Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment. Kunja and Ponnammal are being treated at the Mettupalayam Government Hospital for back injuries. The Karamadai police have registered a case and are investigating.
