Eighteen years later, Siruthuli still leads the way in focusing on ground water recharge and improving the environment across the city

Coimbatore: For the past 18 years now, Coimbatore’s most recognised NGO, Siruthuli has been leading the way on educating how to focus on recharging the ground water and improving the environment across the State.


Coimbatore: For the past 18 years now, Coimbatore’s most recognised NGO, Siruthuli has been leading the way on educating how to focus on recharging the ground water and improving the environment across the State.

Having registered by eco conscious corporate leaders to be the charitable trust, siruthuli has been accorded with many recognitions by the vast number of people for it steps in improving the environment in Coimbatore.

Starting its venture in creating Coimbatore the eco friendly environment and make the city clean and green, it had implemented various projects with the help of partnerships with public private and government including creating awareness.

From constructing more than 750 rain water harvesting tanks in the city to stressing on the under water management, afforestation, waste management, the NGO had done it all.

Setting up a record of planting as many as 13,800 samples in and across the city’s land, it has also desilted many lakes.

The movement led by as many as 14,000 students volunteers on the topic of pudhu vellam has also been the reason why this NGO is great going.

Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jeyalalitha had met the team members of Siruthuli and congratulated them on their steps in improving the environment, besides the city collectors being a great help to them in their ventures.

Upon seeing the district registered as drought announced place in 2003, the team took various efforts in improvising the environment which followed by the appreciations from former president of India Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam writing a own hand written letter and from the waterman of India Rajinder Singh.

It’s first PPP project in building check dam in Coimbatore during 2003 has also been successful in improving the city towards green and eco friendly as it was built in way that it can store as many as 4 crore litre of water, which is also the first of its kind in the state. Now it has the capacity to store 7 crore liter of water after distilling.

Headed by the idea of APJ Abdul Kalam, the NGO also took a measure of planting 5000 saplings in Anna University campus in Coimbatore with the help of 1000 volunteers in three minutes in securing biodiversity.

Saying that the saplings planted in line with commemorating late singer SP Balasubrahmanyam with late actor Vivek being the guest, the NGO sources said the samplings have now helped in the increase of green environment around the planted area.

Sujith Kumar, founder of Matram also said that the project can be replicated in other districts as well with the help of volunteers.

Tamil Nadu is lacking in water conservation whereas it stands at second in sustainable development, said Suresh Sambandham, CEO of Kissflow.

He said the death rate in Tamil Nadu has been increased to 18% during the year between 2018 - 2019 due to natural calamity.

He also stressed on the importance of carbon trading. Carbon trading is aimed at reducing carbon dioxide.
