Regulation for meat shops: Forest Department notification to tea plantation management in Valparai

Coimbatore: There are more than 50 tea estates in the Valparai area of Coimbatore district. The Forest Department has sent a circular to the tea plantation companies on the instructions of the Deputy Director of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, Arokkiyaraj Xavier, for the management of the tea plantations.

The circular said that meat shops such as goat, cow, chicken and fish are operating in the tea estate areas for the people living in the tea estate area. Meat waste dumped in the open without proper measures by the stores increases the spread of disease and also wildlife like leopards come into the city from the forest to eat this meat waste, which can lead to unexpected human casualties.

The circular therefore said it is advisable to ban the operation of meat shops in areas under private tea estate management without proper permission and without any safety precautions. The management of the private tea plantation is requested to provide proper cooperation to the forest department for the prevention of human-wildlife conflict.

It is also requested that the municipal administration give proper advice to the meat shop contractors who are operating with permission and to make awareness.
