College girl succumbs to suicide bid due to extortion by gang of college students in Coimbatore; Police begins thorough investigation
Coimbatore: A third-year student of a private college in Kalapatti Road in Coimbatore ended her life by suicide after being threatened and extorted for money by a gang of college youth.
The 19-year old student reportedly had taken many ‘selfies’ and group photos at college shows with a fellow male student. The youth had borrowed Rs. 35,000 in cash and some jewelry from the girl, but since the youth kept pestering her for more, the girl stopped interacting with him.
The youth who was enraged by her lack of commuication, threatened to turn their existing photos and videos into pornography with the help of his friends and upload them on social media if the girl did not give him more money. The 19-year old student and her parents reportedly receive calls daily from various mobile numbers, and were spoken to obscenely as well as threatened. The frustrated girl student who could not handle the daily torture consumed poison to end her life. She was admitted to the hospital and was receiving treatment, but unfortunately died on Sunday.
The girl's parents lodged a complaint with the Singanallur police and during the investigation, it was revealed that the gang who had extorted her allegedly did the same with many girls under the pretext of love. Complaints have been lodged at various police stations across the city against this particular gang of students. It is expected that in the event of the police doing a thorough investigation, there could be a shocking unravelling of a scandal similar to the infamous Pollachi scandal that rocked the district a few years ago.
