Coimbatore: The rope making industry has been severely affected due to the second wave Covid-19 lockdown at Tamaraikulam near Coimbatore's Kinathukadavu.
Coimbatore: The rope making industry has been affected due to the complete lockdown imposed by the Tamil Nadu Government across Coimbatore district.
In Tamaraikulam area near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district, over a hundred families are traditionally engaged in making ropes from coconut fibre. The rope making industry in the area has been paralyzed for the past two months due to the complete curfew which has impacted weekly-wage coir workers.
In this situation, construction work and building material outlets have also had to be shut down due to the curfew, and rope sales have been affected throughout.
As a result, the rope making industry has been suspended for the past two months, leaving over a 100 families dependent on the industry without income.
The coir workers also said that their industry was being forced to repay loans taken from banks and private financial institutions, and that the Government should take steps to waive loans taken from banks. They also requested the Tamil Nadu Government to provide relief to coir workers who have lost their livelihoods.
