Tribals request permanent appointment of doctor and beds with oxygen facility at Primary Health Centre in Anaikatti

Coimbatore: Tribals in Anaikatti have requested appointment of a permanent doctor at the Coimbatore Anaikatti Primary Health Center and for treatment with beds that are equipped with oxygen facility. With people increasingly becoming vulnerable to the second wave of Covid-19 in Coimbatore district, the public have been struggling due to the lack of beds equipped with oxygen in Government and private hospitals.

A Government primary health center which functions in Periyajambukandi in Veerapandi village area of Coimbatore district cares for 13,000 people. Of this, 11,000 are tribals. Due to the lack of permanent doctors in this Government primary health center, the tribals who have been infected with Covid-19 and pregnant women suffer great distress. Hence, they have urged the hospital to be upgraded to a 5-bed facility and have requested the government to appoint new doctors and nurses to help with birthing of babies, as well as to provide treatment through the ventilator and beds with oxygen facility.

The hospital operates for only four hours and hence locals in the area have demanded that the hospital be turned into a specialized hospital for tribals, operating 24 hours a day. The ambulance with all facilities which catered to tribals here has also been sent to Pollachi, and a small ambulance replaced it. This has created an environment where patients cannot be given the emergency treatment they need.

The Health Department and the district administration has been asked to take immediate action since tribals here would have to travel 36 km to reach the Government Medical College Hospital for any emergency.
