Coimbatore: Coimbatore Government Hospital is in the process of setting up a special coronavirus treatment unit with 138 oxygen beds on the Government Arts College campus as all the oxygen beds are full. The impact of coronavirus infection in Coimbatore is intensifying day by day. More than 3,000 people are infected with the virus daily in the district.
Most of them are suffering from suffocation and there is a shortage of oxygen beds in public and private hospitals in Coimbatore. In most hospitals the beds with oxygen facilities are all found to be full. All the 717 oxygen-equipped beds in the coronavirus treatment unit at Coimbatore Government Hospital are currently full. Thus the 15 beds in the Zero Delay Ward, which was set up to avoid waiting for patients to come for treatment on the hospital premises, are overcrowded. Patients are being supplied with oxygen in Coimbatore Government Hospital in 2 buses equipped with oxygen facilities provided by private charities.
However, the number of patients coming for treatment with viral infections is higher than the number of patients returning home after treatment. Patients continue to wait in ambulances.
Hence work is in full swing to set up a special coronavirus treatment unit with 138 oxygen beds at the nearby Government Arts College to avoid waiting for patients. Coimbatore government hospital management said that soon all the beds will have an oxygen facility and patients with suffocation will be admitted here.
