Dr. R Mahendran who had contested from Coimbatore's Singanallur constituency in the recently conculded State Assembly elections, secured 38,000 votes. He had worked closely with MNM party President, Kamal Haasan during the elctions. Following his resignation, Kamal Haasan was relieved of all party responsibilities and basic membership. Kamal Haasan strongly criticized his resignation and even went to the extent of saying that "some traitors had to be weeded out."
Dr. R Mahendran who polled 1,48,000 votes in the last parliamentary election but resigned after the recent elections created a stir in political circles with his resignation. The failure of MNM to win even one constituency in the recent Assembly election caused great frustration among party cadres. Dr Mahendran had given a detailed account of all that was wrong with MNM in the last 2 years. MNM has now been further weakened by the resignation of key party executives, amid a series of internal disputes over the party leader 's arbitrary actions and a "new" team interfering with the party's activities. Political commentators opine that MNM will soon disband.
