CM announces supply of Remdesivir injections directly to hospitals

CM decides to supply Remdesivir injections directly through private hospitals

Coimbatore: Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K. Stalin todayat the General Secretariat conducted a study on improving the system of administering Remdesivir to patients being treated in private hospitals in Tamil Nadu.

Adequate supply of Remdesivir to patients in Government Hospitals in Tamil Nadu is provided by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation. In addition, the drug is currently being dispensed to patients in private hospitals through private hospitals and directly to the families of patients at outlets in Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, Madurai and Tirunelveli.

In our country only in Tamil Nadu this medicine is being given directly to the families of the patients, Remdesivir should be avoided to be sold in outlets as it causes overcrowding, flouting social distancing and the risk of infection is high. There have been complaints from some recipients of drugs here that they are being misappropriated and sold on the black market at exorbitant prices.

It has been reported that Remdesivir may be of little benefit to patients undergoing oxygen therapy and may not be of great benefit to other patients. According to the advice by the World Health Organization and medical experts and to alleviate the suffering of the general public, it is decided to change the existing system and provide the drug only through hospitals. It was asked to avoid providing tokens to the families of the patients to buy the drug.

From May 18thall private hospitals in Tamil Nadu will be required to post their requests for medicines on the website along with details of patients receiving oxygen treatment in their hospitals. After considering these requests and allocating this medicine, only the representatives of that hospital can go to the sales centers for them and get the prescribed medicine. Details about the website will be released soon.

Medical and Public Welfare Department officials will continue to monitor that the drugs so dispensed are used only by deserving patients and that they are being sold to patients at the same price as they are obtained and not being illegally sold on the counterfeit market. The Department of Public Welfare will take legal action against hospitals that unnecessarily dispense prescriptions to patients and violate the above rules.

Minister Ma Subramaniam and Public Welfare Department Secretary Dr.J. Radhakrishnan attended the meeting.
