"Banks should allow more time to repay loans:" Roadside vendors
Coimbatore: A complete lockdown has been clamped across Tamil Nadu, prohibiting movement of both public and traffic with only exceptions of groceries, vegetables and meat shops being allowed to remain open till 12 noon. Thus the livelihood of roadside vendors has been severely affected and as a result, roadside vendors are struggling to repay loans that they have taken from banks.
Coimbatore District Roadside and Street Vendors Union's President, Mani said, "There are more than 12,000 roadside vendors in the areas under the Corporation of Coimbatore alone, and more than 20,000 roadside vendors throughout the district. They are mostly engaged in the vegetable, basil and fruit and snack businesses.
Their livelihoods have been completely affected due to Covid-19 lockdown. The district administration should help us by providing relief and material assistance of Rs. 5,000, as well as the special loan scheme provided to roadside traders to take action to facilitate the availability of loans through banks. In addition, those who have previously availed of Rs. 10,000 from Central and State Governments should be allowed 3 months time to repay their loans.
The Governments should also assist 2000 Narikuravar families who are not able to trade their beaded jewellery and lost their livelihood. More than 2,000 Narikuravar families have been affected in Malumichampatti, Karamadai and Mettupalayam," added President Mani.
