Social Welfare Department rescues wandering homeless people during lockdown in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Even as lockdown was imposed to combat the second wave of Covid-19, the homeless, elderly and mentally challenged people wandering on the roads were rescued and handed over to the Corporation home by the Coimbatore District Social Welfare Department.
A District Social Welfare official said, "More than 1,200 elderly people in Coimbatore district have been rescued by the Social Welfare Department and are being cared for in various homes. In the meantime, we have set up a team to actively monitor the homeless, the elderly and the mentally challenged wandering on roads.
More than 30 elderly people who were stranded near the railway station, bus stands and main roads were rescued. They are being cared for in the Corporation home and by the Social Welfare Department. Also, since the start of this month's complete lockdown, eight mentally challenged people have been rescued and admitted to the Government Psychiatric Hospital in Tirupur," added the official.
