Coimbatore: Remidesvir, a drug used to treat Covid-19 patients was sold only in Chennai. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government has announced that the drug will be sold in five districts namely Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Trichy and Tirunelveli. Following this, Remidesvir medicine has been on sale in Coimbatore since May 8.
The Remidesvir medicines are sold at 3 counters at the Government Medical College Campus near Avinashi Road, Coimbatore.
A single vial Remidesvir is sold for Rs. 568 and a 6 Vial Remidesvir is sold for Rs. 9,704. Drugs are sold only to those who have a RTPCR test certificate, CT scan certificate, doctor's recommendation letter, patient and buyer's copy of documents.
The drug is also given only to those who have all documents verified by the team of doctors at the Remidesvir sales center.
With 500 vials sold on the first day of sale of Remidesvir which was Saturday and yesterday being a Sunday, the sale for Remidesvir drugs was stopped. But the relatives of patients who came to the center on Sunday were given tokens to buy the medicines on Monday. A total of 63 tokens were distributed yesterday.
It was announced that Remidesvir would be distributed from 10 am to 5 pm. Thus, at 6 am today, people including token recipients gathered in front of the Government Medical College to buy the medicine. As time passed by, the crowds increased. More than 500 people waited in long queues to buy medicines. Drug distribution began at 10 am in the morning and some were allowed into the college campus to avoid crowds.
The public who had been waiting for far too long in front of the college staged a sudden road blockade on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore since they were not let into the campus even after standing in long queues for a long period of time. Following this, police officials intervened and pacified the public after which they dispersed.
"Only 500 vials of Remidesvir drug are being sold everyday. This is the reason why such a crowd of people gather in long queues to buy them. More medicines must be allocated along with additional centers to avoid crowding," opined the public.
