Complete lockdown in Tirupur: Confusion in operation of hosiery units due to vague announcement
Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Government has issued a complete lockdown from today to May 24, to curb the spread of Covid-19 across the state.
However, a complete lockdown was imposed in Tirupur district on Monday amid relaxations only for operation of grocery stores, bakeries and restaurants, while private buses were not allowed to operate.
Even though shops selling essential commodities are operational to aid daily lives of people, the district administration is still in favor of allowing knitwear and allied companies to continue operations in Tirupur.
Knitwear companies which constitute to thousands of companies in Tirupur are still operating, including the face masks and PPE kit manufacturers. But there seems to be a confusion between knitwear companies and workers over the lack of an official announcement in this regard by the admiistration.
On behalf of the Tirupur Exporters' Association, it was announced that the knitting companies should arrange vehicles for the employees and transport them with social distancing followed to enable companies to operate with 50 percent employees. Meanwhile, police detained and fined people who went to work on two-wheelers at various places in Tirupur. Hosiery units have been instructed to transport all workers only by van and not their own two-wheelers.
Police in Tirupur were seen imposing fines on all vehicles that violated safety protocols during lockdown, except those transporting essentials.
