Race Course and Neighbourhood Association's talks with Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner bears fruit

Coimbatore: The Race Course and Neighbourhood Association (RANA) held talks with the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner, P Kumaravel Pandian and thanked him for considering their request to halt proposed work in the neighbourhood as per the Smart City plan, so as to maintain the original structure of the Race Course.

A press release was issued in this regard stating that, "Thomas Park Corner and the Government Arts College Corner are two important places where the round structure was altered as per the Original Smart City Plan. Based on the requests by the public and after some reasoning with the Corporation Commissioner, the Commissioner had agreed to retain the roads that vehicles commuted around the two corners which is a welcome decision.

The Commissioner assured that there will be no kiosks or small eatery outlets on Race Course to prevent commercialization of the neighbourhood. He also promised to double the green cover of the Race Course neighbourhood with native plants and we have sought permission to plant 50 saplings as a first step towards our Joint work for the beautification of Race Course. He also accepted our request to form a Joint Coordination Committee."

The press release further stated that, "They implemented a rain water harvest system which will be done as part of the Smart City Initiative. For issues on Parking Facilities and Traffic Management, the Commissioner acknowledged and promised to look into the issue and come up with dedicated parking lots. RANA intends to closely work with the Coimbatore Corporation on the issues of garbage disposal, garden waste, stray dogs control, illegal construction and encroachments.

RANA has volunteered complete support to resolve these issues. In the future, we expect this Joint Coordination Committee will function to all common interests, purposes and initiatives of Race Course Smart City work which will be discussed before implementation. We would update the media whenever there is information on the progress. We, at RANA will always intend to work and ensure better coordination and cooperation amongst the residents for the betterment of all."
