Dead fish cause stench at city's Periyakulam

Coimbatore: With ponds across Coimbatore being rehabilitated under the Smart City project in Coimbatore, the Ukkadam Periyakulam had been opened out for public use at the end of last February after all the work had been completed.

Currently, people are not being allowed entry into the Periyakulam area owing to the second wave of Covid-19.

Of late, people in the area have been complaining about the stench emananting from dead fish floating in the area.

People were of the opinion that the fish could have died due to water pollution.

"Work is underway to remove the skylights at Ukkadam Periyakulam. In addition, sewage treatment plants have been set up and are in use to prevent water pollution. As the summer heat is intense, it may have caused the fish to die due to lack of oxygen in the water. Work is currently underway to remove the dead fish and water hyacinths," reassured the Corporation officials.
