Newly-built shops in Poo Market temporarily occupied: Encroachments removed old flower market
Coimbatore: To control the spread of the coronavirus, 95 newly constructed shops at RS Puram Poo market have been temporarily opened and florists have been given permission to trade in 50 shops there.
Poo market is operating in RS Puram and it has more than 140 stores. More than 20 tons of flowers are brought here daily from Sathyamangalam, Sirumugai, Bangalore, Nilgiris, Dindigul and Pollachi. Poo market campus has been closed since March 25 last year due to the Coronavirus. Following this, the existing shops were shifted to the Devanga School Grounds on Brooke Bond Road and shops were operating there temporarily.
Florists were then allowed to trade in the old flower market area again recently following the decline in coronavirus. Meanwhile, the construction of 95 new florists at a cost of Rs. 70 lakhs were completed within the last 2 months. Corporation officials said the new shops set up here would be allotted to traders only through auction.
Meanwhile, Coronavirus 2nd wave is spreading very fast in Coimbatore district. Every day 700 people are infected with coronavirus. Various measures are being taken on behalf of the corporation to control the spread of coronavirus. As part of this, measures were taken to control overcrowding in the flower market area.
As part of this, encroachments in old flower markets were removed and florists were allowed to trade in up to 50 shops in the new flower market premises.
A corporation official said, "Half the shops in the old flower market area and half the shops in the new market premises will be in operation and social distancing will be followed. Various measures are being taken to control the spread of coronavirus. More than 30 shop encroachments in the old flower market area have been removed."
