Two plastic eradication check posts operational at Coimbatore-Nilgiris border based on order by Madurai Bench


Coimbatore: Plastic eradication check posts in two places at the Coimbatore-Nilgiris district border have become operational since Thursday.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has ordered the setting up of check posts at the Coimbatore-Nilgiris district border to stop plastic items, plastic water bottles and plastic cold drink bottles from being carried by tourists into the Nilgiris district.

Hence a checkpost and plastic eradication center has been set up at Odanthurai Panchayat Kallar Dhooripalayam Road, on the main Coimbatore-Coonoor route. Similarly, a plastic eradication center has been set up at the check post already set up on behalf of the Forest Department on Kotagiri road.

Measures have been taken to confiscate plastic items, plastic water bottles and cold drink bottles being carried in vehicles passing through these two checkposts and impose fines on such vehicle owners.

A fine of Rs. 50 will be levied for those carrying these banned items on two wheelers and three-wheelers, Rs. 50 for those driving four-wheelers and Rs. 100 on passenger vehicles and Rs. 200 for other four-wheelers, tipper lorries and lorries. Coimbatore District Collector, Nagarajan stated that the order is in effect as of April 22.
