Man with recurrent heart attack undergoes Drug Coated Balloon Treatment at CMCH, first of its kind in Tamil Nadu

This is one of its first kind of treatment in Tamil Nadu done without placing any stent

Coimbatore: A 55-year-old man from Coimbatore, who suffered from repeated episodes of a heart attack in the last 2 years was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) following another heart attack on February 28.

With the CMCH dean's instructions, a team of doctors made sure that the patient was treated with drug-coated balloon angioplasty. This is one of its first kind of treatment in Tamil Nadu done without placing any stent, according to the hospital sources.

Sources also say that the patient had already undergone angioplasty with a stent in October 2018 in the same CMCH hospital. Since then he had suffered a repeated episode of a heart attack.

In 2019, when he was in Chennai, he was admitted to the intensive coronary care unit (ICCU) in a private hospital and now again with repeat incidence in ICCU in CMCH.

The cardiologist team in CMCH diagnosed him with the problem of in-stent restenosis (ISR), defined as more than 50% reduction in coronary artery lumen diameter within the stent.

The patient was tested for repeat angiography and later found out to have the stent which was placed earlier had narrowed to more than 90% diameter, according to the head of the Department of Cardiology Dr J. Nambirajan.

Dean of the hospital Dr Nirmala said the doctors did dilatation of stent with balloon coated with sirolimus drug which will prevent a further episode of stent contraction and also avoiding another stent placement for the patient. This is a first of kind treatment done in Tamil Nadu Government Hospitals.
