There has been a spike in the Covid-19 infection rate among the children in the last 4 months than the total number of cases the city had last year.
Coimbatore: It is a perilous situation as the second wave of Covid-19 is hitting hard. When the Covid-19 infection spread last year, children were largely unaffected by the infection. The children affected by the disease were reported to have only minimal trouble.
Now, the central and state governments have said that the second wave is currently spreading rapidly across the country, is majorly affecting children.
In Tamil Nadu, more than 300 children are being diagnosed with covid-19 on a daily basis. Health Officials say that despite a small increase in the total incidence, children are now more likely to be infected compared to last year.
In the Coimbatore district, only 2,318 people under the age of 14 were affected between March and December last year. But from January till this Monday of 2021, around 2,775 people have tested positive for Covid-19.

The Department of Health has urged the general public to adhere to Covid-19 safety procedures for the benefit of children as they can be infected by parents and relatives.
Health officials said, "So far a total of 5,093 children have been affected by Covid-19 infection. More than 90 per cent of these infections are transmitted from mother to child.
Fortunately, children are not greatly affected. Children remain healthy despite being infected. But in the 2nd variant, the infection has spread to more children than ever before. They could get infected through their parents. Thus parents need to be vigilant. Covid-19 safety measures must be followed to avoid unnecessary trips for the safety of children," the officials added.
