Covishield vaccines to cost Rs. 400 at govt. hospitals, Rs. 600 at private hospitals per dose, says Serum Institute of India

SII is selling Covishield to the Centre at Rs 150 per dose.

Coimbatore: Serum Institute of India's (SII) COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, which is widely used in India for vaccination has fixed prices for the doses. It will cost Rs. 400 per dose at government hospitals and Rs. 600 at private hospitals.

This comes as an announcement days after when many states have imposed night curfews over the surge of cases. The SII announced the prices right after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared on television, speaking to the nation about COVID-19 and how the government is going to handle the situation when many states have already been complaining about the lack of oxygen.

The new round of vaccinations is likely to begin from May 1, where people above the age of 18 can also sign up for vaccination.

The SII also announced that it will continue to provide vaccines for the Centre at the same price, Rs. 150 as before.

It is more affordable than foreign, said SSI upon capping the price to 400 and 600. It also clarified that vaccines in foreign are between 750-1,500 per shot, which is more than as compared to India, justifying the statement.

At a time when the states are complaining about the lack of availability of shots at government hospitals and PHC’s, the move comes as a big blow, as the new policy of government declares that 50% of vaccine doses will be reserved for the centre and the rest will be divided for the states and private hospitals.

Fortunately, the price of the other available vaccines in India’s Immunisation programme, Bharath Biotech's Covaxin has not been recapped yet.
