Valparai Circle Merchants Association held a consultation to discuss lockdown relaxations

Coimbatore: A consultative meeting was held in Valparai on behalf of the Valparai Circle Merchants Association to relax coronavirus restrictions in Valparai.

Tea production is predominantly done across Valparai in the Coimbatore district. As there is a tourist influx, people there rely on tourist vans, rental cars and hotels. In Valparai, workers usually go to work in the tea garden from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, they come to the Valparai area only for one day off to buy groceries and vegetables. As the government imposed various restrictions for about ten months in 2020 to curb the spread of coronavirus, traders in Valparai who relied on things like tourists including, tourist van drivers and hotels were severely affected.

They have lost their livelihood and suffered during the lockdown. Now, after living a normal life for two to three months, the government has imposed a one-day complete lockdown on Sunday from 10 pm to 4 am - night curfew from April 20 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Petitions were sent to the government to relax the complete lockdown on Sunday in the Valparai area and impose restrictions so as not to affect the livelihood of the vendors in the Valparai area.

The Valparai Circle Traders Association held a consultative meeting and took a decision to indulge in a protest next Thursday if the government does not respond.
