Workers protest in Nilgiris today ahead of TN government's ban travelling and tourism

The goverment's announcement will affect more than 1 lakh workers in the Nilgiris district whose livelihood is based on tourism.


The Nilgiris: Also known as The Blue Mountain, the Nilgiris district is an international tourist destination attracting more than 30 lakh tourists visit the place every year.

More than one lakh workers depend on tourism in the Nilgiris district. Unfortunately, Tamil Nadu government has banned tourists from entering the Nilgiris district and announced that all tourist sites will be closed as the spread of Covid-19 is on the rise.

This announcement will affect more than 1 lakh workers in the Nilgiris district whose livelihood is based on tourism.

More than 300 workers have been involved in roadblocks at three locations, including the Ooty Sering Cross area and the Ooty-Mysore National Highway, demanding the government to revoke the announcement. The protestors asked the government to at least permit 50% of tourists inside The Nilgiris district.



After the talk between Police Officials with the protestors, the strike was temporarily postponed. Similarly, drivers from The Nilgiris district took part in a road blockade in front of the District Collector's Office. This caused a stir in the district.
