Architect team to investigate collapsed wall at Periyakulam lake under the Smart City Project

The Corporation Commissioner said the contractor and the project management consultancy firm would be responsible for completing the additional costs with regard to the collapsed wall.

Coimbatore: The Smart City project in Coimbatore received approval to maintain and develop the eight lakes in Coimbatore at an estimated budget of Rs. 320 crores. Of that, Rs. 62.17 crores was spent on the reconstruction of the southern part of Periyakulam. The work order was issued to Kathirvel & Co. Contractor and the work which had begun in March 2019 is currently in progress.

In the early hours of Thursday, the 75-feet wall of a temporary brick building in the southern border area of the Periyakulam Lake collapsed due to loose soil caused by heavy rains. The collapse was surveyed by the engineers in the southern part of the site, as the boundary between the private vacant land and the project site was not clear. So, a temporary retaining wall had to be erected on the brick building to prevent further trespass by the public and other third parties.

A team of experts from the Department of Architecture from Anna University were appointed to analyse the cause of the collapse of the brick building at the site of construction and further action will be taken against the contractor, the project supervision consultancy and field engineers if any technical errors are reported.

It is also reported that various steps have been taken to remove the rubble at the scene and to replace the collapsed retaining wall with a new concrete wall. The Corporation Commissioner has also reiterated that the contractor and the project management consultancy firm would be responsible for bearing all additional costs for the repairs.
