Farmers debate fiercely with Power Grid officials and police in Tirupur

Tirupur: The Power Grid company of the Central Government and the Tamil Nadu Power Transmission Corporation of the State of Tamil Nadu are working to implement 12 high power tower projects in 10 districts including Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul in the western and northern districts of Tamil Nadu through farmlands.

Affected farmers on account of this, have protested asking the Power Grid officials to carry the cables via roads instead of carrying high power cables through agricultural lands. In Vavipalayam village next to Palladam in Tirupur district, the survey work for the construction of the high power tower had been completed and work is underway despite the protests of farmers.

Power Grid officials led by Palladam Tahsildar Devaraj began preparations on Thursday to set up a high-rise power tower again in the same village. Aware of this, more than 100 farmers in the area protested with the Tahsildar and power grid officials and had a heated argument. Farmers in the area questioned the authorities as to why the survey work had already been completed in the area despite the protests of the farmers and why the high tower work was being carried out.

Farmers argued that they could not lose land again as they had already lost their farmlands and would not allow continuation of survey work. Police officials said that the decision will be taken in consultation with the Government officials but the farmers were adamant about not allowing the survey work to continue in their area.

Tension is rife in the area owing to the farmers' protests, with over 100 policemen led by Palladam DSP Sri Ramachandran being deployed in the area.
