Mother donates her liver to save daughter: Doctors at 'KG' perform organ transplant successfully in 20 hours to save the girl's life

Coimbatore: A mother donated her liver for an organ transplant to be performed on her daughter to save her life.

According to a press release issued by the KG Hospital, "A 12-year-old girl from Trichy suddenly fell ill and was admitted to a private hospital there. The doctors who examined the girl had said that she had high levels of sugar in her body and that her liver function was low and that a liver transplant had to be done immediately."

Later, the girl was brought by her parents to KG Hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment on March 10. The girl underwent a successful liver transplant and returned home safe and sound. In this connection, the Head of the KG hospital, K G Bhaktavachalam said, "The liver function of the girl was affected due to the hepatitis virus. In the event of such a malfunction, the impurities in the body are not expelled. If the bile stays inside, the blood becomes contaminated and dizziness occurs, and the body becomes weak and vomiting occurs with whatever you eat.

Therefore, it was decided to carry out a liver transplant surgery. For this, the girl's mother volunteered to donate her liver. Organ transplant is usually performed in two ways. One is to obtain the organs of those who have suffered a stroke and perform organ transplant surgery. The second way is to obtain an organ from a living person and perform the transplant. The Type 2 organ transplant surgery is full of complications. This requires treatment in two operating theatres simultaneously" detailed Dr.K G Bhaktavachalam.

"Accordingly, a portion of the liver was removed from the girl's mother and immediately implanted in the girl. The girl's heart stopped beating twice during the operation. However, doctors tried their best and recovered her pulse. It took 20 hours to complete the transplant. Thus a liver can be donated to a living person successfully and K G Hospital proved it by transplanting the organ using the second method.

The operation was carried out at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs. Doctors Karthik Mathivanan, Thiagarajan and R Senthilkumar are to be commended for the success of this complex surgery," added Dr. K G Bhaktavachalam.
