Salons are functioning empty even on Sundays since the COVID-19 second wave has begun.
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu state government has issued various levels of restrictions in an effort to contain COVID-19 spread. While most businesses and service industries are affected by these restrictions, grooming services providers say that they are affected the most.
Shiva, the owner of a salon shop said, "We are heavily affected due to the disease spread. We can do business in the present day, provide employment and pay our bills only if we provide services like Cutting, Shaving, Facial, Massage, Bleach, Hair Dye and other services. But this has completely changed post-COVID-19 pandemic."
He added, "The number of customers visiting salons has totally gone down. Earlier with hair cuts, we used to provide other grooming services but now only have customers who are visiting us to get a haircut and this has changed as people who came every 3 weeks once are now only visiting once in 2 months. Most of them are doing cutting and shaving at their homes. We have invested heavily in managing shop ambience, air conditioner, TV, sofa and other just customer services, but the crowd is very minimal. This has put us into deep trouble as we are not able to repay our loans."
Meanwhile, there are many salons and grooming service centres which have inbuilt air conditioners for a more convenient ambience. Due to the government's instruction to avoid air-conditioner usage, there is not much air circulation at salons. Shiva said that this has made their customers leave and not visit shops much.
"Our condition is worsening day by day. Usually, we will be packed on Sundays but now there are not even a few customers who are visiting us on the weekends. We request the government to offer us some help to manage the situation," Shiva made an appeal.
