Employees protest against sealing of a tea shop in Coimbatore

The police later removed the protestors from the scene.



Coimbatore: Velan Tea Shop, which is operating in Race Course area in Coimbatore was asked to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 on April 10 for allegedly having too many customers and for violating COVID-19 protocols.

The Race Course area in Coimbatore is filled with government offices and private companies. It was seen that many employees and the public were overcrowding in the tea shop. The shop managers did not control the crowd and hence violated the restrictions imposed by the Coimbatore Corporation to curb the spread of the virus.

The shop proprietor was asked to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000. But today, the shop was sealed off by the officers who inspected the area.



Following this, employees working in the shop involved in a road roko to condemn the action. Upon information, the police reached the spot and removed the protestors.

Mohanraj, an employee of the shop, said that the shop was sealed by the officers who came back today after imposing a fine two days ago. He said, "More than 35 employees working here have lost their jobs and all the prepared snacks are gone to waste today."

Mohanraj also accused the authorities of acting partisan without taking adequate measures to control crowds in busy areas like the commercial complexes.



Due to the sudden roadblock by the protestors, all the buses and two-wheelers were diverted to avoid traffic congestion.
