Coimbatore Corporation gathers pending taxes, Rs 77.35 crore has been collected in taxes

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has collected 91 per cent tax of Rs 169 crore in the last financial year 2020-2021, according to the corporation officials.

In Coimbatore, tax collection was temporarily disrupted due to the corona curfew in April last year. Following this, property tax collection in the city was re-intensified from July last year after the curfew was relaxed.

29 tax collection centers were set up at corporation offices, schools and social welfare centers to facilitate the payment of property taxes. In October last year, Corporation Commissioner Kumaravel Pandian released a list of tax-exempt companies, educational institutions, hospitals and business premises.

The Corporation also warned that the public who fail to pay the property tax will experience a water supply cut. Following this, the collection of outstanding taxes increased in all 5 zones under the Corporation of Coimbatore.

Rs.169 crores of the property tax were due in the financial year 2020-2021, as of December last year. And Rs 84 crore was taxed. The target is to collect the outstanding amount of Rs 85 crore by the end of March 2021.

At the end of the financial year 2020-2021, Rs 77.35 crore out of the outstanding amount of Rs 85 crore has been collected.

According to the corporation officials, 91 per cent of the tax has been collected. "The remaining tax of Rs 7.65 crore has been added to the balance sheet of the last financial year. Action will be taken to recover this amount soon," the officials said.
