Coimbatore gets 25 more COVID-19 labs for rapid tests

According to the health department, up to 20,000 people can be tested daily.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore district receives 25 laboratories for coronavirus testing and diagnosis.According to the health department, up to 20,000 people can be tested daily.

Speaking about the labs, the Health Department Officials said, "In Coimbatore district, a maximum of 750 people were infected with COVID-19 in a single day in September last year. But given the current increase in coronavirus in Coimbatore, it is likely to reach up to 1,000 people a day in the next few weeks. Most of them will be residents of the corporation area.

Therefore the number of corona testing laboratories in the district has been increased to 25 in view of the increasing corona infection. This allows between 12,000 and 20,000 people a day to have a corona test. It is noteworthy that last time only 8 laboratories tested the corona."

They also alerted people that COVID-19 vulnerabilities are slightly higher in 35 wards as per Coimbatore Corporation.

"Here, the homes of those who have been confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 are isolated. Coimbatore Corporation has 5 zones. At least 500 people in a zone undergo corona testing. Furthermore, a mucus sample is collected and tested from at least 20 people associated with a person who has been confirmed infected," said the officials.

Adding, "In Coimbatore, corona infection is currently diagnosed in 6 to 6.5 per cent of people at the end of a corona test. The next few weeks are very important. Therefore, the entire Coimbatore district is being closely monitored by the health and revenue departments.

The city is gearing up with preventative measures and plans to increase COVID-19 testing and to control the virus spread among the public.
