Preparations in full swing ahead of Assembly elections in Tirupur


Coimbatore: In Tiruppur District, Tiruppur North, Tiruppur South, Avinashi, Palladam, Kangayam, Dharapuram, Udumalaipettai and Madathukulam are eight Assembly constituencies with a total electorate of 23,59,804 people. Of this, women constitute 11,66,417 votes, men are 11,93,104 and 283 are third gender votes. Polls are to be held on April 6, in 3343 polling stations in 8 legislative constituencies across Tiruppur district.

In Tiruppur district, there are 14 candidates in the fray for the Dharapuram constituency, 26 in Kangayam constituency, 12 in Avinashi constituency, 15 in Tiruppur North constituency, 20 in Tiruppur south, 20 in Palladam constituency, 15 in Udumalaipettai constituency, 15 in Madathukulam constituency and 137 in 8 assembly constituencies across the district. Two polling machines are to be used in three constituencies of Tiruppur South, Palladam and Kangayam.

The voting machine will have symbols for at least 15 candidates and a symbol for a NOTA. As there are more than 16 candidates in Tiruppur South, Palladam and Kangayam constituencies, two voting machines are to be used in the above constituencies. In the 124 polling stations in Tiruppur district, 168 monitoring officers will be on duty.

There are 22 polling stations in Udumalai constituency which is the highest in the district. 168 monitoring officers have been appointed to work at these 124 tense polling stations across the district. 16,044 postal votes have been received, and 3871 voters of senior and disabled voters were also registered across the district.

To beef up security in the district, over 1,500 policemen from across the district and about 800 policemen from across the city, including paramilitary forces are to be deployed. In addition to these, there are 17,500 staff and officials on duty throughout the district in the election process. Materials required for polling centers across the district are being distributed in 297 zones.
