GN Mills, Thudiyalur, Chinnamettupalayam including all its wards, Saravanampatti, Ganapathi, Avarampalayam have been worst hit due to lack of proper drinking water supply. Faced with this problem for many years, residents of these areas lament that the corporation had dug pits and installed motor to supply water, but all were in vain.
“Though the water has reportedly been supplied through the motor, we still do not get adequate water. The contract has been given to private firms to operate the motor which is why we lack water supply” alleged the residents.
Several parts of the constituency do not have piped water drinking supply and thus have to rely on water tankers said a DMK functionary. When members in the ADMK office nearby in the same constituency were approached to clarify on the issues raised, the members refuted them as baseless.
On condition of anonymity, an ADMK functionary alleged that it is the DMK which sets up people to spread lies in order to mar the image of the ruling ADMK.
However, in other parts of Kavundampalayam main, GN Mills, Thudiyalur and the adjoining areas from Thadagam to Anaikatti, complaints were rife amongst the public about poorly maintained roads and unemployment.
Both the ADMK and DMK candidates PRG Arunkumar and Krishna alias Paiya Gounder assured that the issues raised would be solved as soon as they come to power.
Krishna alias Paiya Gounder during his campaign visit to the Thadagam valley and its adjoining areas last week reiterated that unemployment rate in these panchayats would be reduced. “Most of the people work here for the factories and brick kilns, but I assure you that I would boost up the employment rate if voted to power,” promised Krishna.
The Farmers Association members and activists also suggested that the roads ought to be maintained properly since it lies within the Wester Ghat regions which is comprises of many tourist spots.
MNM's candidate Surabhi Pankaj who is in the spotlight more than the other two candidates admitted that presently there is no regular drinking water supply to the people in the entire constituency. "“I have not used any vehicle to campaign but walked door-to-door to understand the problems of people better. I have so far covered more than 40 km by walk in the last 10 ten days just lending an ear to their plight. I was told that there is no regular drinking water supply, only bad roads and mismanagement of wastes,” he said.
Addressing the query on what would be his first step for the people if voted to power, Surabhi Pankaj responded that he would ensure people in Kavundampalayam constituency had regular water supply, good roads, an effective waste management system, as well as shutting down all TASMAC outlets in residential areas. "Give me just six months time, and I will fulfil all the promises I make now,” he assured. Surabhi Pankaj went a step further to promise that he would build a deaddiction centre to treat alcoholics after shutting down the TASMAC outlets.
Other candidates from AMMK and NTK were not reachable for comments on the issues raised.
