About 5000 tonnes of debris dumped in abandoned quarries: Coimbatore Corporation

According to the statement from Coimbatore City Corporation, the building waste and debris collected from the parts of the city is being dumped at two quarries situated in Madukkarai and Sulur.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation administration is actively working to dump the debris and building waste collected from the areas under its jurisdiction into unused and abandoned quarries in the city.

There are more than 5,500 streets in a total of 100 wards in Coimbatore. In many parts under the corporation, one or the other building works like renovation and construction processes are always in progress. During this time, a huge amount of construction debris is generated. To remove the debris dump in residential areas, the Coimbatore Corporation Officials are collecting building wastes.

It is then taken to the abandoned quarries and pits across the district for disposal. A Corporation official said, “Unused quarries have been found in the district to dump the building waste collected in the areas under the Coimbatore Corporation. Only building waste is dumped into these pits."

The officials also added, "Up to 2 tonnes of debris is collected on a daily basis and so far, the corporation has gathered about 5000 tonnes has been dumped in the abandoned quarries in Madukkarai and Sulur."
