32-year old man recovers due to timely surgeries done by doctors at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital

A 32-year old man hailing from Poosaripalayam, Coimbatore who sustained multiple stab injuries in the chest and abdomen survives owing to timely surgery at CMCH.


Coimbatore: A 32-year old man from Poosaripalayam, Coimbatore sustained multiple stab injuries in the chest and abdomen at around 1 am on March 17. He was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at 4.30am on the same day. After stabilizing and evaluating the patient, CMCH doctors planned to do both cardiac and abdominal surgeries on him.

During the surgeries, a 5 cm sized laceration in the anterior aspect of the right ventricle and a blood clot about 200 ml in the pericardial cavity was noted which was affecting the heart. The patient was reported to be in a critical position since the ventricle is the blood-pumping organ for the entire body.

To save the man's life, both cardiothoracic surgeons and general surgeons treated the patient with the help of the anesthesiologist, for both injuries that were inflicted on the abdomen and chest.

The doctors also noticed that the injury in the right ventricle had to be repaired which was quickly done with help of the Anesthesiologist, while the abdominal surgery was done by the general surgeon.

Both the successful surgeries was done by a team consisting of the Head of Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Prof. Dr. E Sreenivasan, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Prof. Dr. Kalyanasundaram, Cardiothoracic Surgery Asst. Prof. Dr. S A Mohammed Minnathulah, Cardiothoracic Surgery Assistant Professor, Dr. V Aravind, Assistant Professor of General Surgery, Dr. Balasubramaniyam, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Dr. Suresh along with the staff nurse, Porkodi.

These surgeries were done free of cost under the CMCHIS scheme and it is reported that the man is now in good health.
